Telltale Signs that Indicate Your Home is Under Insulated

11 June 2020

If you normally encounter insulation problems, there is a huge possibility that your home is not as functional as you think it is. If you opted for an additional insulation to your purchased or renovated, there is a 90 percent chance that it is not enough. Practically speaking, the housing industry has made it that way. They normally install the minimum requirements to adhere to the code without taking into account what is best for your living space. Let’s look at it this way, the more they install – the more money they have. And face it, code requirements are not really structured to provide you with the maximum comfort and energy efficiency. So it is up to you to take note of the telltale signs that indicate your home is under insulated.

Varying Temperature

A uniformity in temperature is proof enough that you have a good insulation. Likewise, its opposite is absolutely a telltale sign that your home is under insulated. If it is too cold in the living room and too hot in the kitchen, then it is highly recommended to check out your insulation to figure out the problem and make the necessary adjustments.

Expensive Energy Bills

In order to check if your home is under insulated, you could assess the energy bills you have been receiving over time and make a cross comparison. Once you noticed that there are huge and untimely increases, then it is possible that your insulation is not functioning the way it’s supposed to. In some instances, the blown-in insulation in the attics and walls may have settled, making the insulation less effective and possibly leading to areas that are not protected from cold temperatures. You may not notice extreme temperature shifts in your home if your heating or cooling units are working overtime, but you will notice your extreme energy bill. If wasted heat is escaping through your roof and walls, it’s time to replace your insulation.

Cold Drywall and Panelling

Insulation works if the interior ceilings, walls and floors in your home are warm and dry. Drywall and panelling are designed to keep the home from getting damp or cold. Thus, if you notice that these home features are cooling then the insulation is not functioning. During the winter months, drafts in certain areas of a home are caused by cool air entering around window frames and doorways. By having extra insulation added to these areas, you and your family can avoid having to cope with chilly drafts. Adding insulation will not only make your home feel less draft, it will also save you on energy bills.

Rodent Infestation

A proper insulation system is organised via tiny crevices and holes around doorways and windows. These openings are how cold air enters and warm air escapes. Unfortunately, these passageways are also how rodents and other pests make their way into your home. Doubling your insulation can prevent such infestation to occur.
