Blanket Insulation: Various Types and Methods of Installation

20 January 2023

A wide selection of materials may be used for the blanket loft insulation. You are obligated to investigate the data and guidelines supplied by the producers of the materials you are considering using before settling on a certain option for that material. Generally speaking, mineral, glass, and rock fibre are the three primary types of blanket insulation available on the market. As a result of their strong resistance to the conduction of heat, the items in question are often regarded as the best possible materials for insulating a loft space that emits heat. These materials are offered for sale in rolls, and once purchased, they are subsequently cut into the desired dimensions to fill the space and contribute to effective insulation adequately.

Thickness Classifications

The information the manufacturer supplies to the installers is a guide for covering the area to a specified thickness. The depth of 250 millimetres is the point at which blanket materials will be most efficient for insulating a loft area with no insulation whatsoever. Consider adding more layers on top of the current one if you already have some insulation in your loft but it is not functioning to the degree you would like it to. In the past, homes with their lofts insulated would have a layer that was either fifty or one hundred millimetres thick.

At the same time, you have to measure the width of the space that is present between the joists. To ensure that you can purchase the materials for the blanket in the appropriate size, it is imperative that you retain this knowledge and do not let it slip your mind.

Installation Preparations

Before you set out any of the components for the blanket, carry the rolls to the area that is going to be used for filling while it is still rolled up. When all of these rolls are packaged together, the result is a compressed state. When the rolls are unwrapped, they undergo a process that causes them to grow. Because they might start sparks or even fires, the electrical wires and cables around the joist area need to be carefully regarded. As a result, the cables and wires must be clipped to the joists before applying the blanket insulation materials. This is because covering the cables with these materials causes them to get overheated.

Other Safety and Important Considerations

Along the same lines as the electrical connections, water tanks and pipelines are other significant elements that warrant care. Ensure you do not place any blanket loft insulation underneath the water tanks. Also, insulating materials should not be placed over the light fittings in any way. When installing tiles on a roof, you should always begin at one end of the surface. After you have removed the wrapping from the first roll of insulation, cut off the end of the roll so that it can be laid with the cut side facing the eaves. On the other hand, one must be cautious not to obstruct the air duct to guarantee adequate ventilation.
